Dunmore East Swim Club is thrilled to see the launch of Ireland's first-ever National Swimming Strategy 2024-2027. Swimming is Ireland’s second most popular participation sport and has the potential to be truly inclusive for all in society.

We will be breaking it down into three articles, each focusing on key aspects that matter most to our swimmers, coaches, and community.

  1. Introduction of National Swimming Strategy 2024-2027

Open Water Swimming

Open water swimming, also known as wild swimming, has seen a surge in popularity in recent years, particularly due to the lack of access to indoor swimming facilities during the COVID-19 pandemic and as a club, we are thrilled that the National Swimming Strategy 2024-2027 recognizes its potential.

The National Swimming Strategy places a strong emphasis on enhancing open water swimming facilities and promoting safety measures. Safety is a key concern, with 51% of respondents to the public consultation identifying it as a barrier to participation.

To address these concerns, the strategy includes the development of suitable facilities such as changing and showering areas, equal access points, and waste and recycling facilities at outdoor water-based activity locations and lifeguard presence at popular locations. Additionally, the strategy aims to disseminate information to help swimmers make informed choices about when and where to swim, thereby encouraging greater participation in open water swimming while ensuring safety and environmental sustainability.

The printed report will be available during Members' Time on Saturdays. Let us know if you'd like to borrow a copy!
